In 1958, doctors from the Stark Island Health Department broke ground on the Stark Island Camp for Youth. It was destined to become the largest and most active year-round camp in the Pacific West. Located 75 miles off the coast of Malibu, Stark Island has a small population, most of whom work at the camp.
Since it's opening in 1959, Stark Island has developed a nationwide reputation as THE best camp for kids with mental, emotional, or drug abuse issues. Open to kids aged 8 to 18, Stark Island has teachers and doctors of all kinds available to the campers. Counselors also play a big part in the treatment and management of campers, mostly because they've been there!
The doctors and counselors at Stark Island deal with campers with a myriad of issues, including but not limited to:
Other than physicians and teachers, there are three types of counselors at Stark Island. Senior Counselors have completed all three cabin steps and have spent multiple years working as a counselor, then a junior counselor. Junior Counselors have completed all three cabin steps, but have only spent 3 to 4 years as a counselor. Counselors have completed all three cabin steps.
Stays at Stark Island can range from a few weeks to year round. It is up to the camper, their parents, their doctors, and the administration to decide.
Perhaps this is the place for you!
